Ireland Afghanistan Cricket Series Ethics

Cricket Ireland CEO Sarah Keane has confirmed players can opt out of the upcoming series against Afghanistan, expressing "moral discomfort" over hosting the team. As the first permanent female chief executive of an ICC full member nation, Keane acknowledged the ethical concerns while navigating Ireland's cricket obligations.

The contentious series received board approval after a "robust" 90-minute meeting, though not unanimously. Keane noted that 40% of Cricket Ireland's board are women, emphasizing the difficult decision. The board recognized that canceling might diminish visibility for the plight of Afghan women's cricket.

Keane explained that proceeding allows Ireland to maintain pressure on the issue. While the displaced Afghan women's team has been invited to Ireland, scheduling makes a visit unlikely this year. Cricket Ireland intends to use its platform to keep attention on the situation.
