Hodgkinson's Mixed Season Continues with Second Place in Eugene Diamond League

Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson suffered defeat for the second straight Diamond League race in Eugene, finishing runner-up to Kenya's Lilian Odira. The world champion surged ahead in the home straight to claim victory in 1:56.19, with Hodgkinson crossing the line in 1:56.73.

Hodgkinson's preparations were hampered by heavily strapped knees following a training fall, forcing a labored start that proved costly. The 24-year-old Briton struggled to find her rhythm early, despite attempting to build speed through shorter distance races this season.

This setback continues a challenging period for Hodgkinson, who withdrew from June's UK Athletics Championships 400m final after experiencing a minor injury concern. Her strategy of racing over 400m aimed to sharpen her finishing kick ahead of a potential world record assault in the 800m.

Odira's season-best winning time remained well adrift of Jarmila Kratochvilova's 1983 world record of 1:53.28, highlighting the elite standard required to challenge that mark. Hodgkinson's focus now shifts to recovering fully before her next major championship outing.
