The 23-year-old American edged out her training partner Kate Douglass by just 0.04 seconds, ending Douglass's nine-day reign as world record holder.

Douglass had set the previous mark of 23.59 on June 19, creating an unusual dynamic for the University of Virginia teammates. Their training partnership produced an extraordinary back-to-back assault on swimming's sprint freestyle record, with both athletes now holding times faster than Sarah Sjostrom's former standard.

Sjostrom, who held the world record before Douglass, finished second in 23.86 seconds. Walsh's victory adds to her impressive collection of records, including the 50m freestyle short-course world mark and the 100m butterfly long-course record.
