Andrew Flintoff has signed a contract extension to remain England Lions coach through January 2027, BBC Sport understands. The former England all-rounder was initially appointed in September 2024 on a one-year deal but has now committed to the role for nearly two more years. The new terms were agreed late last year but not publicly announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board at the time.

Flintoff's extended tenure comes as he continues to rebuild his coaching career following a serious car crash in 2022. He led the Lions on their recent tour of Australia, where they shadowed the senior squad during the 4-1 Ashes defeat. The 48-year-old would be considered a potential successor to Brendon McCullum if the current head coach departs, though Flintoff has previously stated he's not interested in the top job.

Next week, Flintoff will take the Lions to the UAE for a white-ball series against the Pakistan Shaheens. England captain Ben Stokes and former all-rounder Moeen Ali will join the coaching staff for the tour. The extension signals the ECB's confidence in Flintoff's development as a coach, particularly given his previous experience with the white-ball team and two seasons with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
