New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore has confirmed Charlie Smyth will start as kicker against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Smyth had been on the practice squad with Daniel Carlson earning the starting slot, but inconsistent form led to Carlson's contract termination earlier this week. Moore announced the decision at Wednesday's news briefing, stating, "Charlie will kick this week." He acknowledged Carlson's contributions: "Daniel has made some really big kicks for us - it's just the consistency thing." Smyth, a former Gaelic footballer from Mayobridge, County Down, made his NFL debut last season.
The 25-year-old converted 12 of 16 field goals and all 13 extra points as a starter. With no additional kickers signed, Smyth returns to the lineup for the struggling Saints, who have just two wins from seven games.
