Despite being two seconds behind Australia in qualifying, the altered English quartet pulled off a surprise victory against the Olympic champions. The gamble paid off as Hobbs and Tanfield completed longer turns than usual, crucial for shielding Vernon and maintaining momentum.

"There is strategy in play, different heights and orders," said Tanfield. "Me and Ethan finished ahead of them [Australia's qualifying time]. We knew if we had a clean ride we could beat them." Vernon added that England often holds back equipment for the Olympics, making the win even more significant.

The victory, in a new Commonwealth Games record time of three minutes 47.092 seconds, saw England dethrone Australia. It marks a significant achievement for the team, especially for Hobbs, who was competing in his first major championships.
