Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, 53, has been appointed England Test coach, with Joe Root, 35, returning as captain. Fleming led Chennai Super Kings to a record five Indian Premier League titles during his 17-year tenure.

The appointment follows the dismissal of previous Test coach Brendon McCullum earlier this month after poor results and off-field incidents. Root, whose first spell as captain ran from 2017 to 2022, oversaw 27 Test wins in 65 matches.

Fleming said he was "incredibly excited" to take "one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket." He will not lead the side for the Test series against Pakistan beginning 19 August; assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach.

Fleming will join the team later this summer ahead of the South Africa tour in December. Root called the partnership a "huge motivator," praising Fleming as "an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game."
