British Gymnastics Abuse Process Replaced After Victim Criticism

British Gymnastics will replace its Independent Complaints Panel process following widespread criticism from abuse survivors. Nineteen-year-old Laura, who won a five-figure payout after developing severe eating disorders, described the current system as a complete failure that denied her coaches' accountability.

Laura endured daily weigh-ins starting at age 12, bullying from coaches, and subsequent anorexia and depression that caused her to miss nearly five months of school. Despite the civil case victory, not all her allegations were upheld, leaving her feeling failed by the process. Law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp represents over 28 ongoing claims against the organization.

Nicole Pavier, another survivor, called her ICP experience horrific, citing isolation and inability to present witness statements. The panel partially upheld her complaints but did not classify her coach as a safeguarding risk, preventing public disclosure.

Gymnasts For Change charity condemned the process as fundamentally incompetent, while Christopher Quinlan KC acknowledged gymnasts' concerns about panel decisions. The replacement system must prioritize survivor voices and transparency over institutional protection.
