Former New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell has admitted using cocaine after the first day of Essex's County Championship match against Somerset last September. Bracewell, who opened the bowling and claimed two wickets on day one, tested positive on September 25, 2025. He confirmed the substance use in December and subsequently retired from cricket on December 28, 2025.

The Cricket Regulator imposed a two-year ban on Bracewell despite his retirement. Essex won the match by seven wickets, but Bracewell was not required to bat on day two. The New Zealand international, who played 69 matches across formats, previously served a one-month suspension for cocaine use in 2024. The club confirmed the positive test result in a statement.

Part of a famous cricketing family—uncle John Bracewell played 28 Tests and cousin Michael is a current Black Cap—Bracewell will undergo rehabilitation with Essex's support. The club stated it does not condone his behavior but is committed to helping him through recovery processes. The two-year ban represents a significant consequence for the 33-year-old's cricket career.
