Bell's Ulster Reunion Looms as Australia Face Ireland in Nations Championship

Angus Bell will experience an unusual reunion when Australia's Wallabies meet Ireland in their Nations Championship opener on July 4 in Sydney. The 25-year-old prop spent eight months with Ulster in the United Rugby Championship, forging close bonds with teammates before returning to Australia. Bell described his former colleagues as "friends for life" after adapting to Belfast's similar pub culture and identity.

Ulster contributes ten players to Ireland's squad for the opening matches against Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Names like Robert Baloucoune, Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale and Nathan Doak feature in the backline options. Bell admitted it will feel strange facing these familiar faces so soon after leaving, noting they are "top fellas" who helped him develop as a player during his stint in Northern Ireland.

Current Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt adds another layer to this fixture, having previously guided Ireland to Six Nations success in 2014, 2015 and the 2018 Grand Slam. Bell believes Schmidt's influence still shapes Irish rugby, with playing styles remarkably similar between his former Ulster setup and the current Australian approach.

Bell credits his United Rugby Championship experience for improving his game, particularly in scrummaging against varied opposition styles. Playing against teams from five nations plus European challengers gave him weekly tactical adjustments he wouldn't have encountered waiting for international duty. This cross-hemisphere experience makes him a more complete forward as Australia prepares for their home series.
