George Russell says he is "numb to the disappointment" after crashing out on the opening lap at Spa-Francorchamps, dropping 50 points behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the championship. The collision with Lewis Hamilton — penalised for the incident — ended Russell's race before Eau Rouge, while Antonelli claimed his sixth win in ten races.

Russell revealed a battery deployment failure left him with 0% energy at the top of Eau Rouge, making him "swamped by three cars." Toto Wolff confirmed an engine anomaly cost Russell "half the gap or a little bit more" to Antonelli across the weekend, adding that all Mercedes-powered cars suffered energy loss out of Turn One. Wolff pledged to help Russell rebuild optimism before Hungary.

Antonelli's victory came despite his own battery issue at the start and a poorly timed virtual safety car that handed Charles Leclerc the lead. The Italian reclaimed the position and never looked vulnerable. Both drivers highlighted the complexity of this year's 50/50 hybrid systems, with Antonelli noting: "Sometimes the system just does something a little bit different."

Mercedes now trails Ferrari in the constructors' fight. The team hopes to resolve the deployment gremlins before the final race before the summer break at the Hungaroring.
