Daniel Wiffen says the silver he earned at the Thurs *2022 Commonwealth Games* in Birmingham still sits over his head, even as he has since captured gold at the Olympics, Worlds and Europeans. The result has become a benchmark for his career.

After the Games, set up by a three‑year plan after the Tokyo Olympics, Wiffen went on to win the 800m gold and 1500m bronze at the Paris Olympics in 2024, cementing his status as an Olympic champion. He is now looking ahead to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he will contest the 400m, 800m and 1500m, hoping to add more gold medals to his collection.

He told BBC Sport NI that the silver feels like a hot‑chicken to be replaced by redemption. He admits a short dip in form after appendicitis in 2025 but bounced back to win three medals at the European short‑course championships, proving his resilience.

Wiffen is part of Team NI’s 15‑strong squad and is a genuine multiple‑medal contender. With the swimming programme’s growth across the island of Ireland, he expects a better medal count than Birmingham, aiming for at least one gold, if not three.
