Alloa President Banned for Year Over Discriminatory Speech

Scottish Rugby has handed Alloa RFC president Alan Stewart a 12‑month ban from attending any matches and barred him from holding a role in the game for the same period. The sanction follows a speech at Musselburgh RFC’s April 18 dinner that attendees described as racist, homophobic and sexist. An independent panel upheld the misconduct complaint and the decision today.

Musselburgh RFC issued an apology, specifically acknowledging the hurt caused to its women’s team and pledging a safe environment. The club condemned Stewart’s “very poor judgement” and said he sent a written apology. Scottish Rugby reiterated its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, insisting discriminatory behaviour has no place in the sport or society for players, fans, clubs and officials.

Stewart may appeal the ruling but must complete mandatory equality, diversity and inclusion training before any reinstatement. Charges against Musselburgh RFC and its president were dismissed, leaving the club cleared of formal blame. BBC Scotland has sought comment from Stewart and Alloa RFC, underscoring the sport’s zero‑tolerance stance as the ban takes effect for all participants nationwide today again now.
