On 27 April 1993, a Zambian national team plane crashed off Libreville, Gabon, killing all 30 aboard. The team was en route to a World Cup qualifier against Senegal, aiming for their first major tournament.

The DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft, aging and under-maintained, failed shortly after takeoff. Pilot error followed, as the wrong engine was shut down. Most of the Chipolo-polo squad perished, including stars like Kelvin Mutale and Derby Makinka.

Only minutes before the call about the crash, Kalusha Bwalya was preparing for a run in the Netherlands. Spared by a last-minute squad change, he became a symbol of resilience. He later helped rebuild the team.

The tragedy reshaped Zambian football. A new generation emerged, inspired by loss. In 2012, Zambia won the Africa Cup of Nations, a poignant echo of what might have been.
