Tony Pulis: VAR and Set-Pieces Are Ruining Football's Flow

Tony Pulis has launched a scathing critique of modern football's officiating, arguing that VAR and chaotic set-pieces are undermining the game's integrity. The former manager points to incidents like corners where defenders hold attacking players around the waist without watching the delivery, leading to unnecessary penalties. Leeds boss Daniel Farke's red card for questioning referee time-keeping exemplifies the growing frustration among managers. Pulis insists referees must clamp down harder, awarding penalties or free-kicks to defending teams when fouls occur in the six-yard box.

He also calls for a dedicated time-keeper to manage stoppages, citing rugby union's successful model. The video assistant referee (VAR) system, introduced in 2019, has become a 'monster' according to Pulis, exposing referee incompetence rather than correcting major errors. The system's overuse is driving fans away, with Pulis demanding input from managers and players on reforms before the game is 'bombarded' by officials.
