Former West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Tony Godden has died at 70, the club confirmed. Godden was a beloved figure at The Hawthorns, setting a club record with 228 consecutive appearances between 1977 and 1986. In total, he made 329 appearances for the Baggies over nine seasons, becoming one of the club's most reliable custodians.

His career also included spells at Chelsea and Birmingham City. At Chelsea, Godden made 38 appearances during the 1986-87 season, memorably saving two penalties in a 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Both West Brom and Chelsea expressed their deep sadness at his passing, with West Brom describing themselves as "desperately saddened" and Chelsea saying they were "greatly saddened."

West Bromwich Albion has announced plans for a tribute to Godden during Friday's home match against Wrexham. The club stated that "the thoughts of everyone at the Albion are with Tony's friends, family and loved ones at this tragic time." His death marks the loss of a true goalkeeping great who left an indelible mark on English football.
