La Liga president Javier Tebas has publicly called for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to step down, accusing the governing body of "destroying the football industry." In a recent interview with *La Gazzetta dello Sport*, Tebas criticised mandatory hydration breaks, the extended half‑time interval at the World Cup final, and the controversial suspension lifting of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. He also warned against a potential 64‑team summer tournament, arguing that increasing national team participation would dilute the sport.

Tebas highlighted FIFA’s decision to implement three‑minute hydration breaks in U.S., Mexican and Canadian venues, labeling them as a marketing ploy rather than a player‑welfare measure. He pointed to the long half‑time show featuring Madonna, BTS, Shakira and Justin Bieber as evidence that FIFA prioritises spectacle over the integrity of football.

Despite having the backing of national federations, Infantino’s election system is described by Tebas as "rotten at its core," suggesting that the lack of opposition candidates forces a continuation of the status quo. The 56‑year‑old president is expected to be re‑elected at FIFA’s March congress, but Tebas believes his involvement in the Balogun case could cost him his job.
