Spain midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Gavi received an unusual reward for winning the World Cup 2026 — their body weight in tomatoes. The pair returned to their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca, a town south of Seville with a population under 40,000, for an official reception at the town hall on Wednesday.

Ruiz, who plays for Paris St-Germain and started the final against Argentina, will receive 85kg of tomatoes, while Barcelona's Gavi gets 68.5kg. Local officials say this tradition "has become a hallmark of the municipality for honouring its great athletes." Former Spain winger Jesus Navas, the first player from the town to win the World Cup in 2010, also attended.

Navas and Ruiz previously received tomatoes after Spain's Euro 2024 victory. The town's sports pavilion is named after Navas, and football fields will be renamed after Ruiz and Gavi. A monument dedicated to the three champions is also planned, with the town council calling them "role models for several generations."
