Following conflicting statements, South Africa's sports minister clarified the nation has not formally agreed to host the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon). Deputy Minister Peace Mabe initially announced South Africa would step in, however, Gayton McKenzie stated that Morocco remains the officially designated host. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not initiated any alternative hosting process yet.

Morocco is slated to host Wafcon for the third consecutive time. The North African country has invested heavily in football infrastructure, including preparing for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. South Africa has a history of hosting Wafcon, having done so in 2000, 2004, and 2010. They won the title in 2022.

South Africa expressed its willingness to support CAF if needed. The remarks reflect the government's commitment to supporting African football and its ability to host major sporting events. With the tournament expanding to 16 teams, any late change would pose logistical challenges, even with existing CAF-approved stadiums. CAF has been contacted for comment.

South Africa is also reportedly bidding to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), showing their sustained interest in major sporting events. The confusion underscores the complexities of international tournament organization and the importance of official announcements. The next steps depend on CAF's decisions regarding Morocco's status.
