Ethiopia has submitted an official bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), with the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) affirming the nation's readiness to stage Africa's premier football event. The country previously hosted Afcon in 1962, 1968, and 1976, but current infrastructure lags behind other continental rivals. Ethiopia currently has just one Caf-approved stadium — the 52,000-seat Bahir Dar Stadium — though a new 62,000-capacity Adey Abeba International Stadium in Addis Ababa is expected to open next year. Several other proposed venues remain in early development stages and may struggle to meet Caf standards by 2028.

Beyond stadiums, organizers would need to address training facilities, accommodation, transport, and security concerns, particularly given ongoing conflicts in parts of the country. Caf president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that multiple exciting bids have been received for the 2028, 2032, and 2036 editions, with the tournament moving to a four-year cycle post-2028.

Other contenders include a joint Southern African bid from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Despite speculation, Morocco is reportedly not in the running for 2028 and is instead focusing on co-hosting the 2030 Fifa World Cup. The 2027 Afcon will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
