SFA withdraws support for FIFA president, Infantino

Scottish FA has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino and will not vote for his re‑election, chief executive Ian Maxwell told BBC Sport. The decision mirrors the stance of 55 UEFA associations, who have urged a boycott of FIFA competitions after the aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan to commercialise all FIFA events. The allyship was announced alongside Scotland’s new head coach, Belgian Sebastian Pocognoli.

Fair Square, a non‑profit that campaigns for accountability in sport, wrote to FIFA’s governance, audit and compliance committee demanding that Infantino be ruled ineligible to run again. The letter cites the FIFA statutes that restrict a president to three four‑year terms, noting that Infantino’s 2016–2019 term does not count as a full term. Infantino is slated to stand for a fourth term in 2027, which would extend his tenure to 15 years.

UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation issued an open letter accusing FIFA of “deception” over the FFE proposal, calling for a full independent review. FIFA has committed to present a report at the next council meeting in October, while the three confederations warned that documents related to the abandoned plans must not be deleted.

With no other candidate having entered the race before the 18 November deadline, the football world remains split. The upcoming U‑20 Women’s World Cup in Poland will test UEFA’s threat, as 11 Oceania associations and several Concacaf members diverge in support of Infantino.
