Sargent's $20M MLS Move: Norwich Striker Heads to Toronto

Norwich City striker Josh Sargent has completed a £20m move to Toronto FC, setting what could be a record fee for Major League Soccer. The 26-year-old US international signed a five-year contract after passing a medical, with the initial payment reported at £15.5m and add-ons pushing the total beyond £20m. This potential record would surpass Son Heung-min's £20m-plus transfer to Los Angeles FC last August.

Sargent's departure comes after a turbulent period at Norwich under manager Philippe Clement. The striker fell out of favor following his decision to decline playing in Norwich's FA Cup tie against Walsall last month, which Clement described as "unacceptable." The Belgian manager said Sargent was subsequently told to train with the under-21s, though he maintained there was never a complete breakdown in their relationship.

Clement acknowledged the difficulty of losing a player he "really liked" but emphasized the business reality of modern football. "As a manager you want to keep all your best players, but if there is the right amount of money for players we know that we are not in a situation to stop that," he said. The Canaries plan to use the substantial transfer fee to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window, particularly in finding a replacement striker of similar quality.
