Rotherham United has named former England manager Steve McClaren as its new head of football. The club’s board, led by chairman Stewart, said McClaren’s experience from Middlesbrough, Newcastle and the national team will bring a fresh perspective to the club’s long‑term plans. McClaren, born just outside Rotherham, will oversee the search for a new manager.

McClaren’s résumé includes a League Cup win with Middlesbrough, a UEFA Cup final appearance in 2006, and spells at Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Newcastle United and QPR. He also managed Dutch side FC Twente twice and spent a season with Wolfsburg in Germany. His recent role was assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The appointment follows Lee Clark’s exit after a 23rd‑place finish in League Two, 11 points from safety. McClaren will focus on restructuring the club’s football operations and identifying a replacement with a modern approach. Rotherham’s supporters now await the new director’s first moves as the club seeks stability in the Championship for the season.

McClaren’s arrival signals that Rotherham United plans to rebuild from the ground up, drawing on his international experience to shape a competitive squad. Fans will watch his first moves closely, as the club’s next‑season performance will decide whether the new strategy can lift the Millers out of the lower tiers of the league in 2025.
