Real Madrid have completed a £51.8m deal to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, with the Spanish international currently representing his country at the World Cup. The agreement consists of a £47.5m base fee plus £4.3m in performance add-ons, marking a significant addition to manager Xabi Alonso's defensive options.

Cucurella's departure follows a difficult period at Chelsea where he publicly criticized the club's hierarchy during the March international break. The 27-year-old, who joined Chelsea for £63m from Brighton in 2022, struggled under interim managers after Enzo Maresca's exit and was part of a group of Spanish-speaking players frustrated by the turmoil that saw Chelsea finish 10th.

This signing signals Real Madrid's aggressive summer rebuild under Perez and Mourinho, with Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries also targeted. Cucurella's return to Spain completes a homecoming for the former Barcelona academy product, who previously attracted interest from Atletico Madrid.

The transfer fee represents a £11.2m loss on Chelsea's initial investment, reflecting the player's diminished market value amid the club's struggles. Real Madrid now turn their attention to additional reinforcements as they prepare for Alonso's first full season in charge.
