Real Madrid seal £51.8m Cucurella signing

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Chelsea left‑back Marc Cucurella on a six‑year contract. The deal totals £51.8m, comprising £47.5m upfront and £4.3m in add‑ons. Cucurella, 27, joins the Spanish squad at the World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico, leaving Chelsea with three years remaining on his deal.

The move ends a turbulent spell at Chelsea, where Cucurella criticised the club’s hierarchy after manager Enzo Maresca’s mid‑season exit. He had been linked with Atlético Madrid and a return to Barcelona, but his desire to play in Spain aligned with Real Madrid’s overhaul under president Florentino Pérez, who also targets Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté.

Chelsea accepted the fee partly because Cucurella’s contract included improved terms but no extension, leaving the club little leverage. With the defender heading to a side that will soon be managed by Xabi Alonso, the transfer underscores Real’s intent to rebuild a Spanish core while Chelsea, now 10th in the league, continues a rebuilding phase under caretaker Calum McFarlane.

The six‑year deal ties Cucurella to Madrid until 2030, giving the club flexibility to integrate him into a back line that will lose Dani Carvajal when he retires. His experience in the Premier League and familiarity with Spanish football should bolster a squad aiming for a swift return to the Champions League, while Chelsea recoups a portion of their £63m outlay.
