O'Neill Stays with Northern Ireland After Rejecting Blackburn

Michael O'Neill has turned down the chance to take charge of Blackburn Rovers permanently, confirming he will remain as Northern Ireland manager instead. The 56-year-old was appointed as interim Rovers boss in February, combining the role with his national team duties until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

O'Neill's temporary stint at Ewood Park yielded five wins, five draws, and five defeats from 15 games as Blackburn finished 20th in the Championship, narrowly avoiding relegation. Throughout his dual role, he consistently indicated he could not sustain both positions long-term and would eventually have to choose one.

The decision represents a significant boost for Northern Ireland fans, who will now see O'Neill continue building toward the 2028 European Championship qualifiers. During his first spell in charge, he led the nation to Euro 2016 — their first major tournament in 30 years. His current project features one of the youngest squads in the country's history, with the starting XI against Italy in March averaging just 22.5 years old — the second youngest since World War Two.

Blackburn will now begin their search for a permanent head coach for the 2026-27 season, while O'Neill turns his full attention to preparing Northern Ireland for June's friendlies and the upcoming Nations League campaign.
