No Pub Hours Extension for England's 1am World Cup Clash with Mexico

The government has confirmed pubs cannot extend opening hours for Sunday's England v Mexico World Cup match, which kicks off at 1am UK time in Mexico City. Liberal Democrat MP Max Wilkinson pressed ministers on relaxing licensing laws, arguing pubs would miss out on crucial revenue during the late-night fixture.

Business Minister Kate Dearden explained existing relaxed licensing rules don't cover the 1am start time. Current arrangements allow pubs to stay open until 1am for evening kick-offs between 5pm-9pm, and until 2am for matches after 9pm. However, these provisions fall short for the Mexico City time zone challenge.

The government initially relaxed licensing restrictions in April to help fans watch England and Scotland matches in pubs. Venues can apply for Temporary Event Notice (TEN) applications to stay open late, but the five-working-day deadline makes Sunday applications impossible. Some establishments planned ahead and secured permits for potential tournament progression.

Emma Mc Clarkin of the British Beer and Pub Association criticized the decision, calling it a shame for both fans and publicans. Pubs without TENs face missing the high-profile group stage match, potentially losing significant Sunday night trade during the World Cup.
