Belgium has appointed former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as their new head coach, with a contract extending through Euro 2028. The 49-year-old succeeds Rudi Garcia, whose tenure ended after Belgium's quarter-final exit at the 2026 World Cup. Van Bommel officially begins his duties on August 15.

Van Bommel's most recent managerial role was with Royal Antwerp, where he achieved significant success, securing the Belgian league title, Belgian Cup, and Belgian Super Cup during his two-year tenure. He expressed his honor in taking the position, highlighting Belgium's "outstanding players and enormous potential." Van Bommel aims to build a "disciplined, ambitious and brave" team capable of competing at the highest level.

Vincent Mannaert, Belgian Football Association's sporting director, emphasized Van Bommel's "international experience as both a coach and player" as crucial for the Red Devils' continued development and success. His coaching staff will include Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond. One of his initial challenges will be managing the team through Nations League fixtures against Italy, France, and Turkey in September and October.
