Maradona Death Retrial Begins After Judge Filming Scandal

A retrial concerning the death of football icon Diego Maradona kicks off Tuesday after the initial May 2025 proceedings collapsed. The first trial fell apart because one of the three presiding judges allowed unauthorized filming for a documentary, derailing the pursuit of accountability.

Seven individuals connected to Maradona's medical care face homicide charges, carrying potential sentences between eight and 25 years if convicted. Investigators classified the death as culpable homicide, asserting the team recognized the severity of his condition following brain clot surgery but failed to secure life-saving treatment.

Medical experts previously assessed the home care Maradona received as "deficient and reckless," concluding adequate treatment in a proper facility offered him a better survival chance. Key defendants include his main adviser, Leopoldo Luque, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, with testimony expected until July.

Maradona, who passed away on November 25, 2020, led Argentina to glory, famously scoring the infamous "Hand of God" goal against England in 1986. The proceedings seek justice for the football legend whose treatment proved fatally inadequate.
