England defender Lucy Bronze says a Uefa boycott of Fifa competitions would be the "right thing" for the future of the game, despite the impact on women's football. After Fifa president Gianni Infantino announced plans to sell stakes to private investors, European football's 55 member associations voted to boycott all Fifa competitions. The plans were aborted and Infantino apologised, but Uefa said the boycott could still go ahead.

Women's football would be first affected, with the Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup due to start on 5 September. Six European teams – England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and hosts Poland – are scheduled to play. Bronze, speaking in New Zealand on Chelsea's pre-season tour, said players stand by their beliefs and if boycotting competitions is required, it must happen for the future of the game.

In October, England and other European nations have qualifiers for next summer's Women's World Cup in Brazil. A boycott could prevent European teams, including defending champions Spain, from participating. Former England defender Anita Asante warned the first casualties would be women's tournaments, while Baroness Campbell called it "tragic" that women's football could be first affected.

The English FA has withdrawn support for Infantino, with Wales, Albania and Croatia among others turning their backs on the 56-year-old.
