UEFA has announced a boycott of FIFA tournaments in protest against president Gianni Infantino's plans to sell stakes in the World Cup. The decision, made after an emergency meeting of UEFA's 55 members, could significantly impact world football and Infantino's proposals.

UEFA's stance is a clear message to Infantino: "enough is enough." If the plans proceed, European nations, including those participating in the upcoming Women's World Cup in Brazil and the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, would not play. This united opposition aims to halt Infantino's proposal, as investors would be deterred from buying into tournaments lacking European representation, given their strong performance in recent World Cups.

Other confederations have also expressed concerns. CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have voiced disappointment over the lack of consultation. While Infantino may retain support from some football associations due to increased funding, the boycott by UEFA, representing a significant portion of top footballing nations, jeopardizes the viability of any World Cup without European participation. Infantino's controversial approach has reportedly made him more unpopular than Sepp Blatter.
