Mircea Lucescu has died at age 80, just five days after stepping down as Romania's head coach. The legendary manager resigned Thursday after falling ill during training and suffered a heart attack the following morning. Romania's Football Federation expressed "boundless regret" following the death of "the one who was, is and will remain an absolute legend."

Lucescu guided Romania in two spells, from 1981-1986 and again in 2024. His final match ended in a 1-0 play-off defeat to Turkey on March 26, costing Romania qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Beyond his national team role, he managed European giants including Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas, and Shakhtar Donetsk during a remarkable career spanning 47 years.

As a player, Lucescu earned 64 caps for Romania and captained the team at the 1970 World Cup. Tributes poured in from across football, with Galatasaray honoring him as "the winning manager of our Uefa Super Cup and 15th Turkish league titles." Federation president Razvan Burleanu called it "a black day for Romania and world football," noting Lucescu's immeasurable impact on generations of players.
