Durham Women's Football Club has been rescued from potential extinction by South Shields co-owner Geoff Thompson, who has agreed to acquire a majority shareholding. The investment, supported by Jason Ye, ensures the club will remain in the Women's Super League 2 for the upcoming season. Durham had issued an urgent plea on June 8 after previous takeover attempts collapsed.

The club faced a 21-day deadline to secure new ownership or risk ceasing operations at all levels. Players and staff were informed that the women's team would need to shut down entirely without a buyer. While the financial terms haven't been disclosed, this intervention provides critical stability for a club that has operated independently for over a decade.

Thompson brings significant experience to the role, having previously chaired South Shields FC during a period that saw three successive promotions. He became a co-investor in 2017 and has been instrumental in developing football in the northeast region. The deal allows founders Lee Sanders and Dawn Hepple to retain their shareholder positions.

Durham's survival matters enormously for women's football in the area. Founded in 2007 as an under-10s team, they earned WSL acceptance in 2014 and have competed as an independent entity for 12 years in the second tier. Last season's 10th place finish and previous FA Cup quarter-final appearances demonstrate the club's potential when properly supported.
