Liverpool Boss Slot Urges Hillsborough Law Passage

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed surprise that the Hillsborough Law has not yet been passed, writing in the match programme for Tuesday's Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain. Slot paid tribute to the victims, survivors and bereaved families of the 1989 stadium disaster that claimed 97 lives.

Since becoming head coach, Slot said he has heard moving stories from those affected and learned about the campaign for legislation requiring public officials to tell the truth during disaster inquiries. He emphasized that his view is not based on his association with Liverpool FC, but rather as someone who believes bereaved families should not have to fight for the truth about how their loved ones lost their lives.

Wednesday marks 37 years since the disaster. Labour pledged to introduce the Public Office (Accountability) Bill in its 2024 manifesto, but the legislation has stalled since September. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated his commitment to deliver on the promise, stating that the duty of candour requiring public officials to tell the truth is a principle that drives him.
