Leeds United director Peter Lowy has issued a stark warning that the club's long-awaited expansion of Elland Road must progress immediately or risk never materializing. Plans to increase the ground's capacity from 37,645 seats to approximately 53,000 were formally approved by Leeds City Council in January.

Lowy, the billionaire Australian businessman and principal of the Lowy Family Group, emphasized the urgency, stating 'If we don't get it done this time, it will never happen.' He cited the current 26,000-strong season ticket waiting list and the significant capital Lowy has available as reasons for the tight deadline, adding that 'people like myself and the capital that we have won't sit around for 10 years because we can invest wherever we choose to invest.' Lowy described the 'stars being aligned' for the project but stressed the need for timely government action on infrastructure, specifically mentioning discussions with Chancellor Rachel Reeves about funding a light rail system linking Leeds station to White Rose, including a stop at Elland Road. While Lowy acknowledged pre-work is underway and a masterplan for south Leeds regeneration is approved, he stressed that 'the political class needs to get its act together' to deliver the necessary infrastructure within a reasonable timeframe to unlock the potential for a multi-billion-pound investment in the stadium and surrounding development.
