Lazio Fan Boycott: Empty Seats at Stadio Olimpico Explained

Lazio fans are boycotting matches at the Stadio Olimpico in protest against club president Claudio Lotito, with attendance figures dropping to just 3,400-5,000 in recent games. The boycott began after years of frustration over player sales and lack of investment, with ultras encouraging supporters to stay away until Lotito sells the club. Manager Maurizio Sarri called the empty stadium 'depressing' after Monday's win against Sassuolo.

Fan anger intensified after key players like Ciro Immobile, Luis Alberto, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic departed without adequate replacements. The club's January transfer window saw Taty Castellanos sold to West Ham and Matteo Guendouzi leave, while new signings like Kenneth Taylor and Petar Ratkov arrived without Sarri's input. A leaked phone call showed Lotito criticising Sarri's squad management, though he later claimed his words were taken out of context.

Despite winning the Coppa Italia in 2022 and finishing second in Serie A last season, many fans feel the club has stagnated before a planned 2032 stadium move. Longtime supporter Simon Basten says the boycott is unprecedented in its severity, with fans believing their absence will force Lotito to sell. While the main ultra group announced a one-off return for the AC Milan match as 'a final act of love,' they plan to continue boycotting home games for the rest of the season.
