Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton has been arrested following an assault near a golf club in Merseyside. Merseyside Police confirmed that officers responded to reports of a man being assaulted on Fairway at 21:00 GMT on Sunday, near the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. The victim sustained injuries to his face and ribs.

The 50-year-old Barton and a 43-year-old man were taken into custody on suspicion of wounding. Both suspects remain in police custody for questioning. The victim was transported to hospital for assessment of his injuries. The incident occurred in the Fairway area, a residential street adjacent to the golf club.

Barton, who played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Burnley, retired from professional football in 2017 before transitioning into management. The arrest came to light during a High Court hearing where his legal representative confirmed he was being held in custody. Police investigations into the assault continue as both men remain under questioning.
