Howe's faith in Osula rewarded as Newcastle beat Brighton

Eddie Howe admitted to feeling anxious before Newcastle's match against Brighton, revealing he struggled to sleep ahead of the crucial Premier League fixture. His concerns proved unfounded as Newcastle defeated in-form Brighton 3-1 at St James' Park, with chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan watching from the stands. The victory eased mounting pressure on the Magpies boss after a torrid run of nine defeats in 12 matches had left the club languishing in 15th place.

Howe's decision to start William Osula over £124m worth of forwards Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa paid off handsomely. The Danish striker, recruited from Sheffield United in 2024, opened the scoring with a simple finish after goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen rushed out. Osula caused Brighton problems with his pace throughout and received a warm ovation from supporters when substituted. "He's very hungry, motivated and believes in himself," Howe said. "I think he has a really bright future."

Osula has stepped up with several crucial goals in recent months, including a superb stoppage-time winner against Manchester United, a deadlock breaker at Crystal Palace, and an equaliser against Bournemouth. The 22-year-old was previously a bit-part player when Newcastle were still searching for solutions in the transfer market after failed moves for Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko. While the club may still target a striker this summer, Howe wants to hold on to a player with "really rich promise".
