Former Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan has been named head coach at Livingston, tasked with restoring the club to the Scottish Premiership. The 42-year-old brings coaching experience from Bristol Rovers and Wigan Athletic, including two interim manager stints with the latter club.

Livingston suffered a disastrous return to the top flight, winning just two games from 38 matches before relegation. Sporting director David Martindale praised Whelan's "elite mindset" and "winning mentality," citing his near-100 caps for Ireland and over 300 Premier League appearances.

Martindale ended his six-year managerial tenure in January, while Marvin Bartley departed after relegation was confirmed. Whelan, who spent a decade at Stoke City and also featured for Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Hearts, expressed eagerness to rebuild.

The appointment represents Livingston's attempt to stabilize after a catastrophic season that saw them drop back to the Championship with minimal resistance. Whelan faces immediate pressure to deliver promotion while implementing a winning culture.
