Celtic confirmed that 75‑year‑old Martin O'Neill will return for the 2024‑25 campaign on a one‑year deal with an option for a second year. The club also announced that Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen Mc Manus will stay in the coaching set‑up. O'Neill had guided the club to a league and cup double in 2004‑05.

Maloney and Mc Manus rose from assistant and scouting roles to become key aides during O'Neill’s two interim spells last season, while former Huddersfield Town manager Fotheringham was recruited to bolster the backroom squad. The club has also seen Gavin Strachan leave for a coaching role at West Bromwich Albion, creating a vacancy that O'Neill will fill.

O'Neill’s return follows a period when Celtic won the league and cup double in 2004‑05 and he has since managed the club on three separate occasions. “Everybody at the club played their part in our achievements last season and we now look ahead as again we strive together to bring our supporters more success,” he said in a brief statement.

With O'Neill at the helm, Celtic will aim to restore the dominance that defined the early 2000s and to secure back‑to‑back trophies. The club’s decision to keep a familiar coaching core signals confidence in a strategy that prioritises continuity and disciplined play, a formula that has previously delivered silverware for the Glasgow side.
