Ghana has named Carlos Queiroz head coach of the Black Stars as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup in North America. The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal and Iran manager takes charge immediately, with Ghana’s first Group L clash against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field. The appointment follows the sacking of Otto Addo after a 2‑1 loss to Germany.

Queiroz’s contract is short‑term, ending after the tournament, with the Ghana Football Association set to reassess his role. Sources say the federation received over 600 applications in the first 24 hours after Addo’s dismissal. The shortlist included Slaven Bilic, Herve Renard and Kwesi Appiah, but the GFA chose the veteran for his World Cup pedigree.

Queiroz brings five World Cup experiences, having guided Portugal to 2010 and Iran to 2014, 2018 and 2022. His arrival follows Ghana’s last‑minute dismissal after a 2‑1 defeat to Germany, a 5‑1 loss to Austria in Vienna and a 2‑0 defeat to Japan in Stuttgart. The Black Stars now face Panama, England and Croatia.

With friendlies against Mexico and Wales on the way, Queiroz will test squad depth and tactics before the tournament opens. The move signals Ghana’s intent to rebuild after missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence in 21 years. The 73‑year‑old’s experience could steer the Black Stars toward a deeper World Cup run.
