Carabao Cup Kicks Off Early on Friday in 2026-27

The EFL has confirmed a schedule alteration for the 2026-27 EFL Cup, shifting the competition's opening round to Friday, 7 August, 2026. This marks a departure from tradition, as the tournament, sponsored by Carabao, usually commences with midweek fixtures, save for the Sunday final at Wembley. This change affects only the lower league sides initially.

This decision followed extensive consultation with Championship, League One, and League Two clubs across the EFL. Moving the first round to the weekend preceding the league kick-offs provides clubs with a welcome break. Teams often faced congested schedules, sometimes playing three matches in rapid succession when the cup round was wedged between league outings.

While weekend starts have occurred sporadically before—including a full set of round one weekend games in 2012—this early Friday start for the entire opening round is a notable shift this century. Premier League participants will join the fold starting in the second round, keeping the initial fixtures focused on the lower divisions.

Ultimately, the adjustment prioritizes player welfare by spacing out the early season calendar. Premier League clubs enter later, meaning the focus for the first week of August 2026 will be solely on the EFL contingent battling through the initial knockout stages.
