Bellamy snubs club moves to stay with Wales for Euro 2028

Craig Bellamy has rejected approaches from club sides to honour his commitment to Wales through Euro 2028. Appointed in summer 2024 on a four-year deal, the former captain has won promotion to the Nations League's top tier and implemented an attacking style, though his first qualification campaign ended with a home World Cup play-off defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina in March.

Any club wanting to prise Bellamy away would have to trigger a £700,000 release clause owed to the FAW. He dismissed exit rumours after fielding calls from concerned players, insisting he would not abandon a role he had always wanted. Co-hosting Euro 2028 with England, Scotland and Ireland gives him a compelling reason to remain.

Wales host Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday before travelling to Bucharest to face Romania on Saturday. Defenders Ben Davies and Connor Roberts are back from long-term injuries, though Fulham midfielder Harry Wilson and Ben Cabango have withdrawn. Uncapped trio Cameron Congreve, Ollie Bostock and Jayden Lienou have earned their first senior call-ups.

Bellamy warned that Wales must improve a dreadful June record that stands at two wins from thirteen matches if they want to be taken seriously. Ticket sales for the Ghana friendly have lagged at around 10,000, but the manager attributed that to midweek scheduling after half-term and expects full houses for competitive Nations League fixtures later this year.
