Scott Barnes, a lifelong Aston Villa fan, stunned the West Midlands when he sold his late father's diamond ring to afford a ticket for the club’s first Europa League final since 1982. After winning the ballot on 20 May, the 47‑year‑old found himself short of cash and turned to a jewellery shop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The ring, a gold band set with nine diamonds purchased by his father John in 1988, fetched £550 when Barnes handed it over along with a watch. He broke down in the shop, recalling how his dad had supported him through a gastric bypass and the subsequent health battles that left him disabled.

Barnes, a season ticket holder since the 1970s, has always dreamed of watching Villa on the grandest stages. The Europa League final on 20 May, played in Istanbul via Krakow, offers him a chance to relive the 1982 European Cup win he attended in Rotterdam with his uncles, a moment he describes as the best day of his life.

Fans across the country have shared similar stories, with former West Brom captain Kyle Bartley urging players to hear such devotion. Barnes’ sacrifice underlines the deep connection between Villa supporters and their club, reminding the squad that the effort fans make to reach the pitch can fuel on‑field performance.
