The bond stems from Boakye's grandfather Daniel, who stayed with a Villa-supporting family from Birmingham and passed down his love for the club. He frequently told stories about 'God' – actually Paul McGrath, who made 250+ appearances for Villa between 1989-1996. McGrath was part of the squad when Villa won their last trophy, the 1996 League Cup.
