Google DeepMind's Sierra Leone trial demonstrates AI's potential as a pedagogical partner, not a replacement for teachers. The Guided Learning approach prioritizes conceptual understanding over direct answers, with data showing students built understanding in 91.4% of conversations. Gemini responded with scaffolding questions in 76% of messages, maintaining the cognitive heavy lifting with students.

Students using the tool gained +0.258 standard deviations in math scores, equivalent to 1.2-1.7 years of typical learning progress in just eight weeks. When teachers incorporated Gemini into roughly half their lessons, gains reached 1.8-2.5 years. Engagement proved exceptional: 69% of students met usage targets, far surpassing the typical 5% for educational technology.

Teachers reported shifting from "lecturers" to "facilitators," discovering new ways to explain topics. Student behavior evolved from seeking solutions to skill-building, with 90% of queries focused on understanding by the final week. While promising, the trial highlighted the achievement gap challenge—students with stronger math skills benefited most. The research team plans global expansion and deeper study of metacognition.
