Australian Bond Futures Near Record Highs

Positions on Australia's three-year bond futures have risen toward an all-time high as the nation's growing debt pile fuels demand for hedging. Open interest in the front-month contract of three-year government bond futures increased to 1.4 million contracts on Thursday, the highest since May 2019.

The surge reflects heightened hedging activity as investors manage exposure to Australia's expanding sovereign debt issuance. Market participants are using the three-year futures contract to offset duration risk amid uncertainty over fiscal policy and interest rate trajectories.

Positions hit an all-time high of 1.43 million contracts in 2008 during the global financial crisis, and current levels are approaching that peak. The elevated open interest signals sustained institutional demand for risk management tools as the Australian Office of Financial Management increases bond supply to fund budget deficits.
