The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment, potentially ending his tenure with the team. Gurriel played a key role in Arizona's 2023 World Series run but struggled after tearing his ACL in the 2025 season. The move was announced before Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers, with infielder Jose Fernandez recalled from Triple-A Reno to take his roster spot.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo called the decision "very difficult," noting Gurriel's contributions to the organization, including his All-Star nod in 2023 and his influence in the clubhouse. Gurriel is in the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $42 million contract. If released, Arizona would remain responsible for the $5 million buyout of a $14 million team option for 2027.

He has spent four seasons with the Diamondbacks, earning an All-Star selection in 2023. Gurriel tore his ACL late in the 2025 season and returned ahead of schedule on April 18, 2026, but hit just .210 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 51 games post-injury. He previously played five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and is a career .271 hitter over nine MLB seasons.
