US-listed medtech Stryker is set to invest around $400m in UK robotic surgery company CMR Surgical in a deal that also gives the American firm an option to acquire it outright. The investment is part of Stryker’s broader push into surgical robotics, a market that has seen increased competition and innovation in recent years. CMR Surgical, founded in 2014, has developed the Versius system, a modular robotic platform designed to support a range of surgical procedures.
The company has raised over €300m in funding to date and has secured regulatory approvals in Europe and India. Stryker’s move signals growing interest in robotic-assisted surgery, which is expected to become a $7bn market by 2026. The deal also highlights the continued appeal of UK-based medtech startups to large US corporations seeking to expand their digital and robotic offerings.
