John Egan made 208 appearances for Sheffield United over six seasons, winning promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023. He was named club captain in summer 2023 but played his last game for the Blades in September that year after an Achilles injury sidelined him for nearly 10 months. His contract expired the following summer and was not renewed, leaving him to battle back from injury.

Egan went on trial at Burnley and West Ham, signing a one-year deal with Burnley under Scott Parker. After seven appearances, he moved to Hull in January on an 18-month deal, making his first 90 minutes in over a year against Burnley in a 2-0 loss. He made 10 more appearances as Hull avoided relegation on goal difference.

Under manager Sergej Jakirovic, Egan became a key player, playing 48 times as Hull reached the play-offs and beat Middlesbrough to return to the Premier League. In the top flight, he has kept clean sheets against Coventry and Aston Villa, earned a point at Chelsea, and played in the opening-day win over Manchester United with 18 clearances. His form earned a Republic of Ireland recall in October after a two-year absence.

Though now a bit-part player behind Nathan Collins, Dara O'Shea, and Jake O'Brien, Egan started the 0-0 friendly draw against North Macedonia in May for his 38th cap. With Collins injured and others limited or out of position, Egan is poised to feature in the Nations League opener against Kosovo.
